Madaba is located south of the capital Amman. It is a small town known for its religious structures and ancient art, and better known as the home of the world’s largest collection of ancient mosaics during the Byzantine era. There are hundreds of Mosaics scattered throughout the city and the most remarkable one is the map of the Holy Land dated back to the 6th Century, located in the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George. With two millions piece of colored stone and a full 25×5 meters in its original state- most of which can still be seen today. The map depicts hills, valleys, villages and towns, which give the archaeologists a chance to discover a number of important Biblical sites. There are literally dozens of other mosaics from the 5th to the 7th centuries, scattered throughout Madaba’s Churches and homes, and still might be many underground mosaics not discovered yet.
Furthermore, as part of Jordan’s commitment to restoring and preserving its mosaic masterpieces, you would find Madaba’s spacious Archaeological park and Museum as a true example of this importance that encompassing the remains of an impressive collection of restored Herodian and Byzantine mosaics of the Holy Land from the Church of the Virgin and the Hippolytus Hall part of the 6th century mansion. The Apostles Church is a small one, but it has one of the most fine and beautiful mosaics dedicated to the Twelve Apostles.
Madaba is truly a diverse and harmonious city between its Muslims and Christians. Within this tolerant and harmonic atmosphere, it is recommended to walk and wander around the city once you finish your tour, so you would enjoy your time exploring its narrow streets, markets and chat with local people and you might be invited for a cup of tea of even an invitation for home-made dinner.
