In addition to the Dead Sea, Aqaba is the only city located on the sea in Jordan, besides it is the only port in the country. This only marine outlet in Jordan at the Red Sea is a very important destination in the country since ancient times, where it has a unique combination of the past and present. Aqaba port used to be the cross point and meeting place for pilgrims coming mostly from Africa en route to and from Mecca due to its location in the heart of ancient trade routes.
Despite Aqaba is not rich of archaeological monuments, but there are still some evidence such as the Mamluke Fort right on the edge of the Red Sea, and Ayla Byzantine village. Do not forget the recent discovery of Tell Al- Khaleifah “Iron Age” what is likely to be the oldest church in the world coming from the third century. There is also a museum, part of the Aqaba Fortress, which was previously the home of Al-sharif Hussein Bin Ali “The Great- great grandfather of the present King Abdullah II”. It has a collection of relics including fragments of lusterware from Samaria, pottery, coins, Chinese ceramics and 8th-century Islamic finds.
Its sandy beaches and colorful coral reefs full of marine life are the most pristine on the Red Sea, which makes it an ideal place for beach holiday destination. The city of Aqaba is simply your ticket to take a dive course or even snorkeling and a relaxing sun-path or enjoying swimming during your stay in Jordan. Aqaba is suitable for water sports, such as water – and jet skiing, windsurfing, parasailing, bananas, and fishing. Aqaba is now typically a special free trade zone, which makes is a good deal of industrial development is in the works, taking advantage of special customs and tax regulations.
Those who are interested in Bird watching; Aqaba Bird Observatory is the ideal place for this experience. In 2003, the Jordanian Society for Sustainable Development “JSSD” established lagoons for bird watching at the wastewater plant in Aqaba. The plant is now a favorite destination for many migrant birds heading north up the Gulf of Aqaba each spring. Any tree, bush, dripping irrigation pipe or pool of water is a welcome sight for a tired migrating bird, just arrived from a flight over the sea or desert. With the economical growth of Aqaba there are many more places now for birds to rest, like palm trees, gardens and irrigated fields. And with the people came also a large wastewater treatment plant that is now one of Ababa’s premier bird watching site.
